“In early February I tore my ACL, LCL, and PCL ligaments in my right knee competing in a grappling tournament. My full time job is with the Alaska Smokejumpers in Fairbanks, AK. I train and compete Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in my off season to stay in shape and more or less stay humble. After the injury and MRI later, I was told that "honestly, there's not much more you could have done to destroy your knee,...haven't seen one this bad in a long time." I seriously contemplated traveling to a bigger city such as Minneapolis or Denver to seek treatment, as I wanted the best possible care so I could better set myself up to return to jumping fires. It took me 10 years of my career to get the chance to become a smokejumper and I didn't want to wash my career down the drain because of an injury sustained in my off season. The demands and responsibility of the job are high and so were my expectations for a surgeon and after care. Luke Mortimer surpassed my expectations, the quality and professionalism I received was second to none. I can't thanks him enough and his staff, if it wasn't for them there's a good chance I wouldn't be writing this from my office in Fairbanks after just returning from my 3rd fire jump of the season. Not once did Dr. Mortimer tell "no, you won't be able to do this anymore" ect. He gave me goals and was honest with me, and for that I'm grateful, people in my line of work don't have time or the energy for sugarcoating anything. I don't regret competing, and don't blame the injury for anything. I would rather hurt myself doing something I wanted to be doing, rather than slipping on a set of stairs walking to my truck.
I would recommend Dr. Mortimer to anyone looking for a true professional in all aspects that it entails, and again can't thank him enough.”
